Rinse and Soak the Moong Dal

Rinse the green moong dal thoroughly. You can soak it for 30 minutes to an hour for faster cooking, or cook it directly for a slightly longer time.

Start by Sautéing Onions, Garlic, and Ginger

In a pot or pressure cooker, heat oil and sauté onions, ginger, and garlic until fragrant. This builds the base flavor for your dal.

Add Tomatoes and Spices for Flavor

Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric, cumin powder, and salt to the sautéed mixture. Cook until the tomatoes soften and the spices blend together.

Cook the Green Moong Dal to Perfection

Add the soaked or rinsed moong dal to the pot. Pour in water and cook for 15-20 minutes in a pressure cooker, or simmer until tender if using a regular pot.

Finish with a Tadka of Mustard Seeds & Garlic

Prepare a tadka by heating oil, adding mustard seeds, cumin, and garlic. Pour this over your cooked dal for an aromatic, flavorful finish.

Serve Your Green Moong Dal with Rice or Roti

Serve your Green Moong Dal hot with steamed basmati rice or soft roti. Garnish with fresh cilantro for a burst of color and freshness!
