Soak black gram dal in water for 4-6 hours. This softens the beans and helps them cook faster, resulting in a smooth, creamy dal.
Heat oil or ghee in a pan. Add cumin seeds, asafoetida, and finely chopped onions. Sauté until golden brown for that signature aroma!
Add soaked dal, chopped tomatoes, turmeric, and salt. Let it cook in a pressure cooker or simmer in a pot until tender and perfectly blended with the spices.
